In the same year, he bought the first vines that would help him fulfill his dream of becoming a “bodeguero”, that is, a wine producer. In the following years, he continued to buy vines and produce small quantities of wine. Then, in 1999, he published the first edition of “Contador” . In 2000, seeing the favorable reaction of critics and consumers, he decided to dedicate himself entirely to this personal project. To this end, in 2001, he repaired and equipped his parents’ garage in San Vicente, thus increasing his production capacity. Here, he continues to produce wine until 2007, when his “garage” stage ends. Not before, however, to be rewarded twice, in 2004 and 2005, with 100 Parker points for Contador! This unprecedented performance of Spanish wine strengthened its prestige and propelled it to the international market. Between 2004 and 2006, Benjamin Romeo worked with architect Hector Herrera to design his new winery in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Located in the middle of the vineyards that make up Bodega Contador, it was completed in 2008. The three terraces of the winery mirror the slopes of the place and make it possible to handle grapes and wine by force of gravity. The vineyards located on some of the best terroirs in Rioja are divided into 80 small plots, being cultivated mostly with Tempranillo. From here are born these rare wines, true masterpieces of subtlety, finesse, minerality and elegance. No wonder their creator has become a landmark in the international guild of wine producers.
